now the eyes of my eyes are opened

Written by

As I sit here at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 waiting to board my flight to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, my mind is awash with these words from e.e. cummings:

(now the ears of my ears awake and now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

Travel is a powerful means of waking our ears and opening our eyes. To be faced with the other, the new, the foreign invites us to truly hear and truly see. It moves us beyond what we expect to hear and expect to be there and requires that we not assume but experience. It invites us to live.

And the camera further encourages that wakefulness, that openness for how can the camera frame a moment worth keeping if one isn't present in that moment? May I be present in the moment with wakefulness and openness.

For those interested, I'll include the entirety of the poem after the jump. It expresses the thankfulness I feel as I am waiting to board.

i thank You God for most this amazing day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today, and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing breathing any--lifted from the no of all nothing--human merely being doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
